The History of Texas

Texas is the second largest State within the United States in terms of both population and area. The nickname of Texas is the “Lone Star State”, which refers back to when Texas was an independent republic.

The Dallas Cowboys are one of the most popular teams in the country. They have reached eight Super Bowl finals winning five of them. They are the equal second most successful side of all time and are known as the “America’s Team”. They play at the AT&T Stadium in Arlington, having moved from their old Texas Stadium in Irving, in 2009. The Cowboys local rivals are the Houston Texans and they were only formed in 2002. Their NRG stadium was built in 2002 and was the first with a retractable roof. It has hosted the 2014 Super Bowls of plus The USA National soccer team sometimes use it for their home games.

Soccer is actually the fastest growing sport in Texas. It has two sides in the Major Soccer League, FC Dallas and the Houston Dynamo. There are however, rumours that a third team will be situated in San Antonio in the near future. Baseball has had a stellar 2017 season as the Houston Astros became the first Texan team to win a World Series when they defeated the LA Dodgers in the final. The Astros were formed in 1962 and play their home games at Minute Maid Park which holds a capacity of 41,000 spectators.

The Texas Rangers moved into the region in 1972 from Washington. The Rangers who play their home games in the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex in have reached the World Series in both 2010 and 2011 but are yet to win it.

Texas hosts three teams that play in the NBA, the San Antonio Spurs, the Houston Rockets and the Dallas Mavericks. The San Antonio Spurs have one of the best records in the NBA having made the play offs in 27 of the last 28 seasons. They have won 22 divisional titles and have won the NBA title on 5 occasions.

The Houston Rockets cannot boast a record as quite as good as the Spurs, yet they were the first Team to win an NBA championship. They are also the only team to win back to back championships which they achieved in the 1994 and 1995 seasons. The Dallas Stars play ice Hockey in the Western Conference of the NHL and have won 8 divisional titles since their formation in 1967. In 1998–1999 they won the Stanley Cup and they currently play in the America Airlines Centre in Dallas.

Motor Sport is big in Texas with their being several world class stadiums. The Texas Motor Speedway in Fort Worth hosts NASCAR and IndyCar races. The Circuit of the Americas in Austin hosts the United States Grand Prix for Formula One cars. There is also drag racing at the Texas Motorplex and Houston Raceway Park. Being a massive agricultural State Rodeo events are very popular. The annual Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo is the largest Rodeo in the world. There are qualifying rounds around the State until the finalists meet at Reliant Park which is home to the Houston Rodeo.

College sport is extremely popular in Texas. The University of Texas at Austin play in a 100,000-capacity stadium. In the last 5 years the average attendance has been 89,000 for each home game. The games are also televised live. Even the High School football is followed passionately with schools such as Frisco High playing their games in 20,000 seated stadiums.

Sport in Texas is extremely popular this is reflected by the national success that a wide variety of sports have regularly achieved.
